Footfall wins Civic Society Award

October 17, 2011 by oswestrychamberoftrade

Footfall Oswestry, a community based voluntary partnership won the Mary Hignett Award last night (10th October) at the Annual Oswestry Civic Society Awards ceremony.

‘We’d like to thank the Civic Society for giving us the award, we are delighted to receive the recognition for all the hard work that goes in to such a worthwhile project. We had a lovely evening at the awards ceremony at The Walls. Footfall Oswestry is now working towards more projects, making creative spaces with exhibitions in more empty shop windows and more murals in the town.’

The group is made up of members from the Town Council, OS21, Chamber of Commerce, Walford and North Shropshire College, The Marches School, Qube, Llanfyllin High School, Rhyn Park School, Shropshire Council and Arts Connection.

The group is in its second year and meets monthly. We are always on the look out for volunteers, so if you are interested, then get in touch!

The aim of the partnership is to utilise unloved spaces e.g. empty shop windows, blank walls and revitalise them with artwork in the form of shop window art exhibitions and murals.

The group work closely with Estate Agents and Landlords/Owners to ensure empty spaces are made ‘creative spaces’. The outcome of the artwork is to increase footfall around the town centre, to make the centre more attractive, and to help Estate Agents to let or sell the empty properties, making for a more vibrant and busy town centre.
